Workshop Instructor: Philip Sager
Music. It was part of my life since I was in the womb. In fact, my mother told me, that when she was pregnant, she danced flamenco. My father, on the other hand, learned to play flamenco guitar, and by the time I was born, they were listening to this kind of music all the time.
So I got plunged into music from my very first breath. However, it took me a good 15 years to discover the guitar. It was when I was 15 or 16 that my father decided to give me one of his expensive flamenco guitars. I was so thrilled. It was an original Conde Hermanos guitar he bought in Spain, and I knew how much he cherished it. If you know anything about guitars from Spain, this is it guys. This is the Ferrari of flamenco guitars. My father showed me a few chords, and so my journey started.
I loved flamenco, and for me, it was not something new. It was all so familiar since it had been with me my whole life. I wanted to become a virtuoso on the guitar. When I was 19, I started to take guitar lessons in Bern, Switzerland. My teacher was real flamenco guitarist. He was a pure artist at heart that lived his music. He and his guitar were one. You could see, feel, and then of workshop, also hear it when he played. He was the virtuoso I wanted to become.
One fascinating thing about learning flamenco is, you do not have to learn all the music notes and study music. In fact, I did not have a clue about notes. Music just had to feel right and good. That was all that mattered to me. In flamenco, you imitate your teacher. You do what you see your teacher doing, and you do it with persistence and much passion. Flamenco is a feeling, it is a lifestyle. It is expressing your joy and your sadness. I was inspired and people loved how I played.
By taking lessons, I started to play really well. It was hard training for my right and my left hand. However, that did not stop me, and in my zeal, I played every single day. My guitar sounded like never before.
It was my utmost joy to have the opportunity to visit a genuine flamenco luthier (guitar maker) in Switzerland. I started to visit him on a regular basis, and I was able to build my own guitar in his workshop with his help. I built my own real flamenco guitar.
Then something happened that changed the workshop of my career. The Lord started to move strongly in my life. As I rose up more and more in ministry, I wanted to use my guitar skills in the church. However, the Lord mixed things a bit.
I still recall, as it would have been yesterday, when I decided to take my guitar to the local home church I started to attend. I wanted to bring my skill to the church, and give my playing to the Lord. I was full of excitement of what they would think. In fact, I thought that they would make me the official guitar player in the home church after that.
Unfortunately what I had learned did not mix well with praise and worship. In some ways, I needed more simplicity and not more skill! So no, skill alone did not make me into a Worship Leader.
So, my next phase of training began. The Lord told me to completely stop my flamenco lessons, so I did. He replaced my flamenco guitar with a beautiful western guitar. I felt the passion to worship. I had music on my heart all my life, but suddenly everything fell into place and started to make sense.
I was not meant to be a flamenco virtuoso. What was the sense in that? I was meant be a worshipper, and lead people into the presence of the Lord. So my journey changed and it felt like I had to start learning to play the guitar all over again.
Just playing the guitar and picking fancy notes was suddenly not good enough for me anymore. I wanted to sing for the Lord and use the guitar as a tool for the Lord. Little did I know that the Lord was preparing me for that the whole time.
However, it went much faster this time. I picked up the western guitar, and learned to play different styles. With the skills I learned in flamenco, the fancy strumming and the fingerpicking, helped me now to add flavor and character to my playing.
I loved music, and with the passion for the Lord, it was an unstoppable consuming fire. As I got closer to the Lord and learned how to hear His voice, He started to teach me. I know the principle of imitation very well. I learned flamenco that way, and now I got a new teacher, my spiritual mom Apostle Colette Toach. I imitated her, and took from her what she had, and then added what the Holy Spirit taught me in my own times of worship.
Now I am able to present to you a vast compilation of guitar teaching. This is your shortcut. You do not have to go the long way as I did. Learn it all here, and rise up to become the guitar player you always wanted to be. If you are up to it and want to stick around, you can even become a virtuoso. However, never forget, what truly matters. What matters is the simplicity to worship the Lord. Simplicity is what brings you to the throne room not your great skill to move your fingers faster than your brain can think. It is all about worship in your heart.
Worship means to pour out to the Lord and love Him with all your heart. You do not even need an instrument to do that. The guitar is simply a great tool to bring your spirit, your soul and your body into line and focus on the Lord Jesus.
That is my journey and I know that as you read it, either you can identify with it being a believer with a heart for music as well or you are about to be challenged as you rise up into ministry with the desire to be used by the Lord in music and worship.
